Selection Policy

The library media materials funds are used for books and other materials for use by students during the school year in which the funds are allocated. Library media specialists are encouraged to spend the funds as early as possible in the school year. Selection of materials for school library media collections is one of our greatest responsibilities. This responsibility is delegated to the professionally trained library media specialist in accordance with HCPSS School Board adopted policies and guidelines (Policy #8040).

After determining collection needs, media specialists select and acquire high-quality materials that meet Howard County Public School System guidelines.

Reconsideration Policy

Occasionally, a citizen will challenge a library media item. If this occurs, the request for reevaluation of library media materials should be sent directly to the principal, who is responsible for following the reevaluation procedures. Specific guidelines for handling this situation are set forth in the Selection of Instructional Materials Policy. A sample of the Request for Reevaluation of Instructional Materials in Use is in the appendix. Library media specialists are notified about decisions regarding challenged materials.
